Many Japanese have sent their applause to South Korean national team captain Park Ji-sung, 30, of Manchester United, following the 2011 Asian Cup football semi-final match with Japan, Jan. 25 in Korean time.
Japanese users of the social networking service Twitter have retweeted (re-published) posts along the lines of "Park Ji-sung sought to shake hands with the Japanese players and staff after the game" and "Park is truly remarkable," even though the game finished in the early hours of the morning.
Further, "Park Ji-sung" was the third most popular Google search inquiry in Japan, following the match.
Park's former team mate from his days at Japanese club Kyoto Sanga and midfielder on the Japanese team Yasuhito Endo, 31, of Gamba Osaka, said after the match, "Park Ji-sng is a great player as ever," adding that "he always puts forth his best play, and I hope he continues as the leader of the South Korean team."
Park shone in his 100th cap and led his team well. However, South Korea lost 0-3 in the penalty shoot-out, after drawing 2-2 to extra time.

25일 저녁(한국시각) 한국과 일본의 '2011 아시안컵 4강전' 경기가 끝난 뒤 일본인들은 한국 대표팀 주장 박지성(30, 맨체스터 유나이티드)에게 찬사를 보냈다.
경기 직후 새벽까지 이어진 경기에도 불구하고 일본 트위터 사용자들의 타임라인에 "시합이 끝나자 박지성이 곧장 일본 스태프와 선수들에게 악수를 청하러 왔다"며 "정말 멋지다"는 글에 리트윗(돌려보기)이 잇따랐다.
또 일본 구글 실시간 검색어에 '박지성'이 3위로 오르는 등 많은 일본인들이 박지성에게 관심을 보였다.
한편 과거 박지성과 함께 일본 교토 퍼플상가에서 팀 동료로 활약했던 일본 대표팀의 미드필더 엔도 야스히토(31, 감바 오사카)는 경기 직후 "박지성은 여전히 좋은 선수"라며 "그는 늘 최상급의 경기력을 선보인다"고 말했다. 엔도는 "박지성이 한국 대표팀의 리더로 계속 활약했으면 좋겠다"고 덧붙였다.
이날 A매치 100번째 경기였던 박지성은 페널티킥을 유도하며 맹활약을 펼쳤지만, 한국은 연장전까지 2-2로 비긴 후 승부차기서 0-3으로 패했다.
