North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s third wife and biological mother of heir apparent, Kim Jong-un, was unveiled in an old photo by the Daily NK, which deals with North Korea news, on Monday.
Ko Young-hee, whose earlier name was Ko Young-ja, was captured dancing gracefully to the Korean fan dance in the photo, according to the media. Ko is presumed to have died in 2004.
Daily NK reported that she was active when she was caught in the photo of 1973 issue of the Chosun Hwabo, North Korea’s pictorial magazine for overseas propaganda. So far the only known photo of Ko is one published by the “Chosun folksong collection.”
A North Korean-Japanese who works in the art community of the pro-NK group in Japan confirmed the woman holding her arms up in the newly discovered photo was Ko. “We used to call her ‘Dr. Ko.’ She played lead roles in numerous shows such as ‘Korean fan dance’ and ‘The Shepherd and the Maid,’” he told Daily NK.
“A North Korean actress Park Ae-ra also said that ‘among the women traveling to Japan, Kim Jong-il’s most favorite lover is one of them’ in 1973, a year before Ko left for Japan,” she added.
Kim’s first wife, Sung Hye-lim, gave birth to Kim Jong-nam, the eldest son, in 1971. However, it can be safely assumed that Kim Jong-il had been seeing Ko even before his son’s first birthday.
After North Korea’s name policy of banning women from using “ja” in their names, Ko had to change her name from Young-ja to Young-hee. The magazine, however, still captioned Ko with her birth name.
'김정일의 여인' 고영희…사진 공개
김정일의 셋째 부인이자 김정은의 생모인 고영희(2004년 사망)의 무용수 시절 사진이 공개됐다. 사진 속의 고영희는 갸름한 얼굴형의 상당한 미인으로 ‘김정일의 여인’으로 불릴만했다.
30일 북한전문매체 데일리NK는 1973년 발간된 북한의 대외 선전용 사진잡지 ‘조선화보’에서 1970년대 만수대예술단 무용수로 활동한 고영희의 미공개 사진이 포착됐다고 보도했다.
1973년 발간된 조선화보에는 그 해 8월~9월 사이 일본을 방문한 평양 만수대예술단의 공연 내용이 사진과 함께 소개돼 있다. 이 가운데 ‘부채춤’이라는 제목의 사진에 고영희로 추정되는 인물이 공연을 펼치는 모습이 보인다.
조 총련 예술관련 분야에서 일하며 만수대 예술단 공연을 추진했던 한 관계자는 데일리NK와의 인터뷰에서 “중앙에서 부채를 높이 드는 여성이 고영희가 분명하다”면서 “우리는 당시 이 여성을 ‘고영희 선생님’이라고 불렀는데 ‘조국 진달래’, ‘부채춤’, ‘목동과 처녀’ 등의 공연에서 주연으로 활약했다”고 말했다.
이 관계자는 또 “(1973년 고영희가 일본에서 공연하기) 1년 전 박애라라는 북한 여배우에게서 ‘내년 일본에 가는 여성 중에는 다음 지도자(김정일)가 가장 아끼는 여성이 속해 있다’라는 말을 들었다”고 했다.
그는 “일본 공연을 마치고 돌아간 고영희가 나중에 김정일의 부인이 된 사실은 조총련 관계자에게서 들어 알고 있었다”고 전했다.
이 화보에서 고영희는 고영자라는 이름을 사용하고 있다. 김일성이 해방 이후 북한 여성의 이름 끝에 ‘자(子)’를 붙이지 못하게 했고, 이미 자를 쓰던 여성들도 개명하라고 지시했다. 따라서 고영희도 북한으로 귀국한 이후 이름을 ‘고영자’에서 ‘고영희’로 바꾼 것으로 보인다고 데일리NK는 보도했다. |
